The 2016 Challenge Cup that was contested in Nisku Alberta this past weekend at the Silent Ice Center, saw teams from British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario and Quebec battle it out to become the first 2016 winner. For the first time ever, the KSL was represented in the Challenge Cup, sending teams from Ontario and Quebec in the 2016 birth year.
The atmosphere in the Silent Ice center was electric all throughout the weekend. Playoff game Sunday showed us some great action in both semi-final games.
The final was the Flyers HC who had a perfect record going in up against a very talented team from the KSL Ontario. The game was a see-saw type of game with neither team wanting to give an inch. The Flyers scored first in the second period before KSL Ontario clawed back with the equalizer halfway through the third.
The Flyers were not to be outdone however and with 5:31 left in the 3rd period Barrett Gardner scored shorthanded and it turned out to be the winner.
